Why check image metadata before sharing?

Before sharing photos online — especially on public platforms — it's important to check what metadata is embedded. Smartphone photos often contain your exact GPS location. Removing EXIF data prevents this from being extracted by recipients or web scrapers that analyse uploaded images.

Frequently Asked Questions

Standard PNG files do not contain EXIF data. However, they can contain tEXt, iTXt, and zTXt chunks with metadata like author and description. JPEG is the most common format for full EXIF metadata including GPS. Our viewer shows file-level info for all formats, and EXIF tags where present.
Screenshots typically do not contain GPS data since they are generated by software rather than a camera. However, they can contain device information and timestamps. Photos taken with a camera app and shared as JPEG files are far more likely to contain GPS metadata.
