What is HEIC and Why Does Apple Use It?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is Apple's implementation of the HEIF standard, based on the HEVC video codec. Apple switched to HEIC in iOS 11 because it delivers similar visual quality to JPEG at roughly half the file size — saving precious storage on iPhones. The downside is compatibility: Windows, Android, and many web platforms don't natively support HEIC. Converting to JPG solves this instantly.
