⚠️ Specs change every year. The presets are typical values compiled from recent notifications. Pixel size and KB limits vary by exam, post and year — always check the official notification or the upload instructions on the application portal before submitting.

What is an exam photo resizer?

Online application forms for Indian recruitment and entrance exams accept a photograph only if it matches a fixed pixel size and a file size window, such as 20 to 50 KB. A phone photo is usually several megabytes and the wrong shape, so the portal rejects it.

This resizer does the three jobs in one place: it locks the crop to the required shape, scales the result to the exact pixels and finds the JPEG quality that lands inside your KB limits. Ticks under the preview confirm pixels, file size and format before you upload.

How to resize a photo for an exam form in 5 steps

  1. Take a fresh photo

Recent, in colour, face straight, against a plain white or light wall.

  2. Upload and pick your exam

Choose SSC, IBPS/SBI, UPSC, NEET or RRB, or type the values from your notification.

  3. Adjust the crop

Drag the locked box so your face fills about 70–80% of the height.

  4. Add name and date if asked

Tick the strip option only when the notification requires it.

  5. Check and download

Confirm the green ticks, then download the JPG and upload it.

Supported formats

JPG / JPEGinput · output

Output is always a standard JPEG, as portals require.

PNG / WebPinput

Transparent areas become white.

BMP / GIFinput

Older scans and exports.

Files up to 50 MB are accepted; very large images are scaled to 2,400 px on the long side before cropping. HEIC iPhone photos must be converted to JPG first, for example with our HEIC to JPG converter.

How does it work?

Your photo is decoded and cropped on a canvas in your browser, then downscaled in halving steps for sharpness. The tool encodes JPEG at different quality levels using a binary search until the file fits under your maximum. If it ends up below the minimum, harmless padding is added to the file without changing a pixel.

KB window logic

Works whether the portal counts 1 KB as 1,000 or 1,024 bytes.

Photo size for popular exams

These are typical values compiled from recent notifications and built into the presets. Specifications change between exams, posts and years, so always check your official notification or the upload page on the portal and type its numbers into the custom fields if they differ.

Some newer forms, including recent SSC and RRB cycles, capture a live photo through the app or webcam instead of an upload. Follow whatever the current notification says.

Step by step: uploading your photo on an Indian exam portal

Portals differ in layout, but SSC, IBPS, SBI, UPSC and NTA forms follow a similar flow.

  1. Read the notification first. Note the photo pixels, KB range, background colour and whether name and date are required.
  2. Prepare files before logging in. Resize the photo and your signature here, and save them with simple names such as photo.jpg.
  3. Register or log in with your one-time registration details and complete the personal and educational sections.
  4. Open the document upload step. Choose the photo file and wait for the preview to appear.
  5. Check the preview carefully. Your face should be clear and uncut, and the portal should show no size error.
  6. Save, pay and download the confirmation page. Keep printed copies of the same photo for the admit card and exam day.

Common reasons exam photos are rejected

  • File size outside the range: too large is common, but too small also fails on many portals.
  • Wrong pixel dimensions or shape, or a photo stretched to fit.
  • Blur, low light or heavy compression that hides facial features.
  • Cap, dark glasses or hair over the face, unless worn for religious reasons where allowed.
  • Coloured or cluttered background when a white or light one is required.
  • An old photo, or one that does not match how you look on exam day.
  • Photo of a printed photo, or a selfie with a tilted head.
  • Missing name and date when the notification asks for them; add them with name and date on photo.

Your photo follows you to the exam hall

The uploaded photo is usually printed on your admit card, and invigilators compare it with your face on exam day. Many exams also ask you to carry extra printed copies of the same photo. Avoid a big change in appearance between the photo and the exam, such as a new beard or spectacles you will not wear.

Keep the original photo too. If the notification changes or you apply for another exam, you can produce a new size in seconds.

Frequently asked questions

SSC forms have typically asked for a JPEG photo of 20 to 50 KB, about 3.5 × 4.5 cm, with older forms stating 100 × 120 pixels. Newer SSC applications may capture a live photo instead. Always follow the current SSC notification for your exam.
Upload the photo, pick a preset or set minimum 20 and maximum 50 KB, and the tool adjusts JPEG quality until the file lands in that range at the exact pixel size. The KB check turns green when it fits, then you download the JPG.
IBPS and SBI notifications have typically asked for 200 × 230 pixels and 20 to 50 KB in JPEG, a recent colour photo on a light background. Signature, thumb impression and declaration have separate limits. Confirm the numbers in your specific notification before uploading.
Recent UPSC forms accept a JPG photo with each side between 350 and 1,000 pixels and a size of roughly 20 to 200 KB, with the face covering about three quarters of the photo. The preset uses 413 × 531 px. Check the current UPSC instructions.
Some portals reject files under a minimum such as 20 KB. A small, simple photo can compress below that. This tool adds harmless padding inside the JPEG to reach the minimum without changing any pixels, so the file passes the size check.
Only if your notification asks for it. Some exams in certain years, such as SSC and NEET, and some state recruitment forms have wanted the name and date of photograph below the picture. Tick the strip option and it fits inside the required pixel size.
You can if it meets the rules, but selfies are often too close, tilted or unevenly lit. Ask someone to take the photo from about 1.5 metres at eye level, against a plain light wall in daylight. Then crop and resize it here.
Yes. The photo is processed by JavaScript in your browser and is never uploaded to a server, so your identity photo stays on your device. Nothing is stored after you close the tab, and there is no account to create.
Yes. Open this page in your phone's browser, tap to choose the photo from your gallery, adjust the crop with your finger and download the JPG. It saves to your downloads folder, ready to attach in the exam portal from the same phone.
If even the lowest quality is above your maximum, the photo has too much detail for that pixel size. The checks will flag it in red. Crop tighter, use a plainer background, or confirm that the pixel and KB values you entered match the notification.
