🪄 Transparent Background

Make Background Transparent

Remove a white or solid-colour background from a logo, product photo, scan or signature and download a transparent PNG. Perfect for sellers, designers and office work, and it runs in your browser.

  • ✓ Three modes: colour, connected area, signature
  • ✓ Soft edges without white halos
  • ✓ No AI upload, files stay on your device

What does a transparent background tool do?

Many images arrive with a plain background you don't want: a logo exported on white, a product shot on a grey sweep, or a signature photographed on paper. Placing them on a coloured web page or slide leaves an ugly rectangle behind the subject.

This tool turns that background colour into transparency. It measures how close each pixel is to the background colour, makes matching pixels clear and partially matching edge pixels semi-transparent, then removes the leftover background tint from those edges. Unlike AI cut-out services, it never uploads your image, and it works best on flat or evenly lit backgrounds.

How to make a background transparent in 5 steps

  1. Add your image

Drop a JPG, PNG or WebP. The background colour is detected from the image border.

  2. Choose a mode

Remove a colour everywhere, only the connected area touching the edges, or extract a signature.

  3. Fine-tune

Raise tolerance to catch shadows or off-white; adjust soft edges for smooth outlines.

  4. Check the result

Switch the backdrop to checkerboard, white or black and zoom in on edges.

  5. Download

Save a transparent PNG, or WebP for a smaller file. Trim edges if you want a tight crop.

Supported formats

JPGinput

Common for scans and product photos.

PNG / WebPinput · output

Output keeps full alpha transparency.

GIF / BMP / AVIFinput

AVIF depends on your browser.

No JPG output

JPEG cannot store transparency.

Files up to 60 MB. Images above 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to fit the browser's canvas limit. WebP export depends on browser support.

How does it work?

The image is drawn to a canvas and analysed pixel by pixel in JavaScript. No machine-learning model is downloaded and no server is involved, so results are instant and predictable.

🎨

Colour to alpha

Each pixel gets an alpha value from its distance to the background colour, similar to GIMP's Colour to Alpha.

🪣

Connected fill

Flood fill from the edges or tapped points removes only background that touches them, protecting white inside the subject.

✍️

Signature mode

Normalises uneven paper lighting and can recolour ink to pure black or blue.

✨

Edge matting

Semi-transparent edge pixels are un-mixed from the background so no white fringe remains.

Which mode should you use?

The right mode depends on whether the background colour also appears inside your subject.

Remove a colour

Best for logos, icons and text on a plain background. Every pixel that matches the colour becomes transparent, including the holes inside letters such as "o" and "e". That is usually exactly what you want for a logo.

Connected

Best for product photos and people. Only background that is connected to the image edges is removed, so a white shirt, label or highlight in the middle stays solid. Tap extra points to clear enclosed gaps, such as the space inside a mug handle.

Signature

Designed for a signature photographed or scanned on paper. It evens out shadows and paper texture, then keeps only the ink. Trimming is on by default so you get a tight PNG ready to place in a document or the signature resizer.

Getting clean edges without halos

Most edges in a photo or logo are anti-aliased: the pixels along a curve are a blend of subject and background. Simply deleting the background leaves those blended pixels behind as a pale outline that shows up on dark pages.

  • Tolerance controls how different a pixel can be from the background and still be removed. Start low and raise it until shadows and JPEG noise disappear.
  • Soft edges sets the range of partial transparency. Higher values give smoother outlines; lower values give crisp, hard edges for pixel art or screenshots.
  • Preview backdrops matter. Always check against black as well as white, because halos from a white background are invisible on white.

If an area of the subject is accidentally removed, switch to Connected mode or lower the tolerance a little.

Where transparent PNGs are useful

A transparent image can be layered over any colour, photo or video. Common uses include:

  • Online shops: marketplace listings often require a pure white background; cut the product out once, then place it on white or any brand colour.
  • Logos: websites, email signatures and slide decks look professional when the logo sits directly on the background.
  • Documents: a transparent signature can be placed over a PDF line without covering text.
  • Favicons and stickers: transparency is what lets an icon blend into a browser tab or messaging app.

Once you have the PNG, you can vectorise it with the PNG to SVG converter or make a favicon with the favicon generator. For complex photos with hair or busy scenes, an AI cut-out tool will do better; this tool is built for flat backgrounds.

Frequently asked questions

Drop your image into the tool. It detects the background colour from the image border and removes it straight away. Adjust tolerance and soft edges until the edges look clean on a black preview, then download the result as a transparent PNG or WebP file.
Yes, this is the most common use. Keep Remove a colour mode selected with white as the colour. The tool clears all white, including inside letters, and blends anti-aliased edges so the logo has no white fringe when placed on dark backgrounds.
The JPEG format has no alpha channel, so it cannot store transparency. Any transparent area saved as JPG is filled with a solid colour. Use PNG, which works everywhere, or WebP, which is usually smaller and supported by all modern browsers.
No. It uses colour-distance and flood-fill algorithms that run in JavaScript inside your browser. No AI model is downloaded and nothing is uploaded, so it works on confidential documents and signatures and responds instantly to every slider change, even when you are offline.
Switch to Connected mode. It removes only background pixels connected to the image edges, so white areas surrounded by the subject, such as a shirt or label, are kept. Tap a point inside an enclosed gap to remove that area too.
Choose Signature mode and drop a photo or scan of the signature. The tool flattens uneven paper lighting, removes the paper and trims to the ink with padding. You can keep the original ink colour or switch it to black or blue.
Yes. Use the colour picker or the Pick from image button and click the background. Green screens, grey studio sweeps and coloured paper all work, provided the background is fairly even and differs clearly from the colours used in the subject itself.
The edge pixels still contain some background colour. Increase soft edges or tolerance slightly and preview against a black backdrop. The tool's edge matting removes most fringes, but heavy JPEG compression around edges can need a slightly higher tolerance to clean up fully.
It crops the downloaded image to the smallest rectangle that contains visible pixels, removing empty transparent margins. You can add padding in pixels to keep some breathing room. This is useful for logos and signatures that need to align precisely.
Files up to 60 MB can be opened. Images larger than 16.7 megapixels are scaled down to fit the canvas limit that browsers, especially Safari on iPhone and iPad, impose, and you'll see a short notice telling you the new pixel dimensions.
