What is a passport size photo maker?

A passport size photo maker crops an ordinary portrait to the exact shape and head size a passport or visa office expects, then lays out copies on standard photo paper so you can print them at a kiosk or at home. It saves a trip to a studio when you need photos for an application, ID card or form.

This tool covers India, the US, the UK, Schengen countries, Canada, Australia, China and the UAE, or any size you type in millimetres or inches. Guides on the preview show where the top of the head, chin and eyes should fall for the chosen document.

How to make a passport size photo in 5 steps

  1. Upload a fresh portrait

A sharp, front-facing photo against a plain light wall, in even daylight.

  2. Pick the document

Select the country preset or enter a custom size.

  3. Align your face

Drag and zoom, or press Auto-center face, until head and chin sit on the guides.

  4. Download the photo

Save the 300 DPI JPEG, with an optional maximum KB for online forms.

  5. Print the sheet

Choose paper, download the JPEG or PDF sheet and print at 100% scale.

Supported formats

JPG / PNG / WebPinput

Phone photos and scans, up to 30 MB.

JPEG photooutput

Exact size at 300 DPI, DPI written into the file.

JPEG sheetoutput

4×6, 5×7, A4 or Letter with cut lines.

PDF sheetoutput

The same sheet as a one-page PDF.

Very large photos are scaled to 3,200 px on the long side before editing, still far more than any passport photo needs. HEIC photos must be converted to JPG first.

How does it work?

The photo is drawn on a canvas inside your browser. Auto-center loads the open-source face-api detector on demand, finds your face and scales it to the preset's head height. The final crop is rendered at 300 pixels per inch and saved as JPEG.

🔒

No upload

Your photo never leaves your device; only the face model is downloaded.

Exact millimetres

35 × 45 mm becomes 413 × 531 px at 300 DPI.

Smart sheet layout

Fits as many copies as the paper allows, with cut lines.

Passport and visa photo sizes by country

These are the typical requirements built into the presets. Rules change and can differ between passport, visa and online applications, so check the official source for your application before printing.

In India, Passport Seva Kendras normally capture your photo at the appointment, so printed photos are mainly needed for applications through Indian missions abroad, visas, and the many forms that ask for a "passport size" 3.5 × 4.5 cm picture.

Taking a passport photo at home that gets accepted

  • Light: face a window in daylight, with no harsh sun. Shadows on the face or wall are a common reason for rejection.
  • Background: stand about a metre in front of a plain white or light wall so your shadow falls behind you.
  • Camera: ask someone else to shoot from about 1.5 metres at eye level. Selfies distort the nose and are often too close.
  • Expression: neutral, mouth closed, both eyes open and looking at the lens.
  • Glasses and headwear: the US no longer accepts glasses in passport photos, and many countries reject glare or tinted lenses. Remove hats unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
  • No editing: filters, beauty modes and background replacement can lead to rejection. The optional whitening here only lightens a plain wall connected to the edges.

Printing the sheet and avoiding common rejections

Print the sheet at 100% or "actual size" with scaling turned off; "fit to page" shrinks every photo. Matte or semi-gloss photo paper scans best. A 4 × 6 in print of 35 × 45 mm photos usually fits eight copies with the default 2 mm margin and 1.5 mm gap. Cut along the grey lines with a ruler and a sharp blade.

Why passport photos are rejected

  • Head too small or too large, or the top of the hair cropped off.
  • Photo older than six months, or no longer a true likeness.
  • Blurry, pixelated, too dark or over-exposed.
  • Patterned or colored background, or visible shadows.
  • Printed with the wrong scale, so the size is a few millimetres off.

For exam forms that want a small JPEG instead of a print, use the exam photo resizer, and add a caption with name and date on photo.

Frequently asked questions

The common Indian passport size photo is 3.5 × 4.5 cm (35 × 45 mm) on a white background, with the face covering most of the frame. Visa applications often use 2 × 2 inches instead. Requirements vary by office and form, so check the official instructions.
At 300 DPI, 35 × 45 mm is 413 × 531 pixels. This tool writes the 300 DPI value into the JPEG, so it prints at the correct physical size. For online forms, follow the pixel and KB limits the portal states, which can differ from print sizes.
Yes. Choose the US preset, align your head between the guides so it measures 1 to 1⅜ inches from chin to crown, and download a 600 × 600 px JPEG. For printing, use the 4 × 6 sheet, which fits six photos when margin and gap are zero.
No. The photo is processed on a canvas in your browser. When you press Auto-center face, the page downloads the open-source face detection model from a public CDN, but your photo itself is never sent anywhere. Closing the tab discards everything.
Download the sheet as PDF or JPEG, open it and print at 100% or actual size with scaling off. Use 4 × 6 inch photo paper or A4. Measure one photo with a ruler before cutting; if it is off, check the printer's scaling settings.
It can brighten a plain, evenly lit wall. The Whiten option flood-fills pixels connected to the photo's edges that match the wall color, controlled by a tolerance slider. It is not AI background removal, so it works best when you photograph against a light, uniform wall.
It depends on the country. The US has not accepted glasses in passport photos since 2016, except with a medical statement. Other countries allow them without glare or tinted lenses. Removing glasses is the safest choice. Check your passport authority's photo guidance before taking the picture.
Common reasons are shadows on the face or background, a head that is too small or cropped, blur, wrong size from scaled printing, glasses glare, an expression that is not neutral, or a photo older than six months. Retake in even daylight against a plain light wall.
Yes. Enter a value in Max file size, KB, before downloading, and the tool lowers JPEG quality step by step until the photo fits. If it cannot reach the limit at the required pixel size, it saves the smallest version and tells you.
Yes. There is no sign-up, watermark or charge, and you can download as many photos and sheets as you need. Because processing happens on your own device, the only cost is your photo paper and printing. A kiosk print of a 4 × 6 sheet is usually the cheapest option.
