What is a PDF merger?

A PDF merger joins separate PDF files into a single document, one after another, in the order you choose. It is handy when a job portal accepts only one upload, when you send a contract with its annexes, or when scanned pages arrive as separate files.

This tool copies the original pages into a new PDF instead of turning them into pictures. Text stays sharp and searchable, links keep working, and every page keeps its own size and orientation. You can add files in several batches, check page counts and sizes in the list, and remove anything you added by mistake before you merge.

How to merge PDF files in 4 steps

  1. Add your PDFs

Drop two or more files on the box, or click to choose them.

  2. Set the order

Drag rows or use the arrow buttons. Sort A–Z for numbered files.

  3. Merge

Press Merge PDFs. The new file and its size appear below.

  4. Download

Save merged.pdf and open it to check the pages.

Supported formats

PDFinput

Any standard PDF, including scans and mixed page sizes.

PDFoutput

One merged.pdf with every page in your chosen order.

Encrypted PDFnot supported

Password-protected files are named and skipped.

Up to 100 files per merge and 200 MB per file. Very large merges depend on your device’s memory.

How does it work?

Each file is read in your browser and opened with pdf-lib, an open-source PDF library. Merging creates an empty PDF and copies every page, with its fonts and images, from each file in list order. A small preview of each first page is drawn with pdf.js.

Real pages

Pages are copied, not rasterised, so quality is unchanged.

Damaged or locked files are named so you know which one to fix.

What is kept, and what is not, when you merge

Because pages are copied rather than re-drawn, the visible content of every page comes through unchanged: text, vector graphics, images, page size, rotation and clickable links on the page.

Some things belong to the whole document rather than to a page, and those are not carried over:

  • Bookmarks (the outline in the sidebar) are dropped.
  • Form fields may still show their values but may no longer be fillable. Fill and save forms before merging.
  • Digital signatures stop being valid, because the merged file is a new document.
  • Title and author are replaced with neutral values.

For most uses, such as uploading a single application file or sending one attachment, none of this matters. If you rely on bookmarks to move around a long manual, or on a form that others still have to fill in, keep the original files as well and send the merged copy only to people who need one document.

Why the merged file is about the size of the parts

A merged PDF is usually close to the sum of the input sizes, sometimes slightly smaller because the output uses compact object streams. Nothing is recompressed, so a merge of three 2 MB scans will still be around 6 MB.

If a portal sets an upload limit, merge first and then shrink the result with Compress PDF. Do it in that order: compressing each part separately and merging later gives the same total with more steps. When the files are photos rather than PDFs, use JPG to PDF to build the document in one go.

Scans are usually the heavy part

Text-based PDFs exported from a word processor are often only a few hundred kilobytes, while a scanned page can be one or two megabytes on its own. If the merged file is much bigger than expected, look at the size shown on each row: the largest file is the one worth compressing or rescanning at a lower resolution.

Tips for a clean result

Name scanned files with leading zeros, such as 01-cover.pdf and 02-letter.pdf, so that Sort A–Z puts them in the right order straight away. Check the page count on each row: a file showing more pages than you expected may contain blank pages you can remove afterwards with Split PDF.

If a file is rejected as password-protected, open it in your PDF reader, enter the password and save or print a copy without protection. A file reported as damaged often opens again after you re-download it or re-export it from the program that made it.

For applications, a common order is cover letter, CV or résumé, then certificates and references, with the newest first. If the portal gives its own list of required documents, follow that order exactly so the reviewer finds each item where they expect it.

Finally, open the merged file before you send it. Scroll through quickly to confirm that the order is right and that no page is missing.

Frequently asked questions

Add two or more PDFs to the tool above, put them in the order you want and press Merge PDFs. Then download merged.pdf to save it. There is no account, watermark or daily limit, and the merge happens on your own device.
Yes. The files are read and combined by JavaScript in your browser and are never sent to a server. You can check this yourself: add your files, switch off your internet connection, and then merge and download as usual. It still works.
Drag a row by its handle or thumbnail, which also works with a finger on phones. You can also use the up and down arrow buttons on each row, or Sort A–Z to order by file name. The merged pages follow the list from top to bottom.
Yes. Press Add PDFs or drop more files onto the list at any time. New files are added at the bottom, and you can then move them wherever you need. Changing the list clears any earlier result, so merge again before downloading.
No. Pages are copied with their original text, fonts and images, so nothing is re-compressed or converted to pictures. Zoom in on the merged file and it looks exactly like the originals. Text you could select or search before stays selectable and searchable.
The PDF is protected with a password or encryption, which the merger cannot remove. Open it in a PDF reader, enter the password if needed, and save or print it as a new PDF without protection. Then add the new copy to the list.
Yes. Each page keeps its own size and orientation, so an A4 letter, a US Letter form and a landscape chart can sit in one file. The tool does not resize pages to match, which keeps the content exactly as it was in each original.
Up to 100 files, each up to 200 MB. The real limit is your device’s memory, since everything is held in the browser while merging. Ordinary documents merge quickly on phones; for very large jobs, a desktop browser is more comfortable.
Yes. Open this page in Safari, Chrome or another modern browser, tap the box and choose PDFs from Files or your downloads. Reorder with your finger or the arrow buttons. On iPhone, the merged file is saved to Downloads in the Files app.
The merger always adds whole files. To use only certain pages, first extract them with Split PDF, which saves the pages you pick as a new PDF, and then add that new file to the merge list alongside the others.
