What does it mean to sign a PDF online?

Signing a PDF online usually means putting an image of your signature onto the page, the digital version of signing a printout. It is how most people sign rental agreements, school forms, timesheets and offer letters when the sender just needs the document back with your signature on it.

This tool lets you create that signature three ways: draw it with a mouse, finger or stylus, type your name in a script font, or upload a photo of your real signature. You place it wherever the document needs it, on as many pages as you like, and add the date or your printed name. The rest of the PDF is left untouched.

How to sign a PDF in 5 steps

  1. Open the PDF

Drop it on the box. The pages appear on the right, or below on phones.

  2. Create a signature

Draw, type or upload it, and pick an ink colour.

  3. Place it

Choose a page and press Place signature.

  4. Position and size

Drag it onto the signature line and resize it with the corner handle.

  5. Download

Add a date if needed, then save signed.pdf.

How does it work?

pdf.js draws each page in your browser as you scroll. Your signature is turned into a transparent PNG and cropped to the ink. When you save, pdf-lib embeds that PNG into the original PDF at the position you chose, converting screen coordinates to PDF points and allowing for rotated pages and cropped page boxes.

Electronic signature or digital signature?

The two terms are often mixed up. An electronic signature is any electronic sign that you agree to a document, such as a typed name, a drawn signature or an image of your handwriting. That is what this tool creates.

A digital signature is a cryptographic seal made with a certificate. PDF readers can check it and show a warning if anyone changed the file after signing. This tool does not create one, and the signed PDF can still be edited by anyone who has it.

In many places, including under the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS Regulation, a simple electronic signature can have legal effect. Some documents, such as certain property, court or notarised papers, need a stronger form of signature or ink on paper. If you are unsure, ask the person or organisation that sent you the document what they accept.

Getting a signature that looks natural

On a phone or tablet, drawing with a finger or stylus gives the most natural result. Sign larger than you would on paper, filling most of the box, and shrink it on the page afterwards. Small drawings scaled up look shaky.

With a mouse, the typed option is often neater. Dancing Script and Great Vibes are both handwriting-style fonts; try each to see which suits your name.

For the most authentic look, sign a sheet of white paper with a dark pen, photograph it in good light and upload it. Keep Make white background transparent on and raise the cut-off slider if grey paper tone still shows, or lower it if thin strokes start to disappear.

Blue ink is common on signed paperwork because it helps show an original from a photocopy; black is the safe choice for forms that will be printed in greyscale.

Before you send the signed PDF

Open signed.pdf and check every page you signed. Make sure the signature sits on the line and does not cover printed text. If the recipient needs your initials on each page, place a small copy on every page; the same signature can be placed as often as you like.

If the file is too big to email afterwards, compress the PDF. To send only the signed pages, use Split PDF, and to add a cover letter or attachments, merge the PDFs into one file.

Some forms have fillable fields for a name or date. This tool does not fill those fields, so type into them in your PDF reader first, save, and then add your signature here. Placing text on top of an empty field works visually, but the field itself stays blank.

Keep a copy of what you signed. Because a visual signature is just part of the page, your saved copy is your record of the document as it was when you signed it.

Frequently asked questions

Open the PDF in the tool above, then draw, type or upload your signature. Choose the page, press Place signature, drag it onto the signature line and resize it. Add the date if needed and download signed.pdf. There is no printing, scanning or account required.
In many countries a simple electronic signature can be legally binding, for example under the US ESIGN Act and the EU eIDAS Regulation. Some documents still need a certificate-based or handwritten signature. This is not legal advice, so check with the recipient or a lawyer for important agreements.
No. The tool places an image of your signature on the page, which is a visual electronic signature. It does not add a cryptographic certificate, so PDF readers will not show a “signed and valid” banner, and the file can still be edited after signing.
No. The PDF is opened, displayed and saved entirely by your browser, and your signature image is created on your device too. Nothing is sent to Imageflowlab or anyone else, which makes the tool suitable for contracts, payslips and other private paperwork.
Yes. The signature pad works with touch and stylus input on iPhone, iPad and Android. On phones the controls appear above the pages. After placing the signature, drag it with one finger and resize it with the round handle at its bottom-right corner.
Choose another page in the Add to page list and press Place signature again. Each placement can be moved, resized and deleted on its own. You can mix signatures, dates and text on any page, and everything is saved together in one signed.pdf.
Sign white paper with a dark pen, photograph or scan it, and choose the image on the Upload tab. Keep the white-background option on so the paper turns transparent, then adjust the cut-off slider until only the ink remains. The image is cropped to the signature automatically.
Yes. Pick the date, which defaults to today, choose a format such as 31/12/2026 or 12/31/2026, and press Place date. Use the Text box for your printed name, job title or initials. Both appear in the chosen ink colour and can be dragged and resized.
No. The original pages, text, links and form fields stay as they were; the tool only adds images on top of the pages you choose. If the PDF already carried a certificate-based digital signature, adding anything afterwards will make that existing signature show as changed.
The most common reason is password protection or encryption, which the tool cannot remove. Open the file in a PDF reader with the password and save or print a copy without protection. A damaged download can also fail, so try downloading the original again.
